Certified Lactation Specialist Course

45 CERPs and Nursing CEUs

To help you study for the CLS and the IBLCE exam, LEC offers an Exam Practice Book of eight 50-multiple choice questions and 1 exam of 60 pictures.  Similar to the CLS and IBLCE exam in format, this book is a must-have study for anyone taking the exam.
Counseling the Nursing Mother, 4th edition

LEC recommends Counseling the Nursing Mother 5th Edition, by Lauwers & Swisher (2010, Jones & Bartlett, publishers) prior to attending the course.

Topical Outline

The Certified Lactation Specialist Course is designed for the aspiring lactation consultant or nurses, physicians, midwives, dieticians, breastfeeding assistants or others desirous of improving their knowledge base and skills in working with the breastfeeding dyad. All areas included on the IBLCE exam are addressed. The 5 day course provides half the needed number of continuing education hours in lactation to qualify to sit for the IBLCE exam. The other half can be obtained through LECs home study courses, or attending other conferences.  Lactation management skills are taught through practical application of scientific principles. The course is continuously updated in response to changes within the profession and the rapidly expanding body of scientific knowledge. Certification as a lactation specialist is achieved through attendance at the entire course, completion of assigned homework and readings during the course, and passing the of the end of course exam on the last day.

It includes information and discussion specific to the practice of lactation consulting. This would include documentation, developing private, hospital, clinic, or public health practices, review of the Standards of Practice as delineated by the professional association and ethical issues. Emphasis is  placed on preparing you for practice as an IBCLC with a concentration of practical aspects of lactation management. It also covers how to obtain clinical experience, and gives you specifics on how to prepare to take the IBLCE exam as well as the exam at the end of the CLS course itself.   The information will be valuable, even if you aren't sure you want to go "all the way" to becoming an  IBCLC.

This certification is a stepping stone to the IBCLC credential. It is hoped that those who attend this course ultimately go on to become board certified, although that is not a requirement. During this very practical course, participants will be taught how to use appropriate counseling skills, how to teach mothers and families, and most importantly, how to function hands-on as a clinician.

Class times: 8:00 to 5:30 each day. Coffee and tea provided at morning and afternoon breaks. Lunch is one hour on your own.

TUITION: $745. Early bird fee: $695 (registration one month or more prior to first day of the course). Four or more attendees attending from same institution – contact LEC for discount information.

If you sign up for the week long CLS course AND 3 home study courses at the same time     in order to fulfill the requirements to take the IBLCE exam, the total fee is: $1095 (regular) or $1045 (early bird)  if you register one month or more in advance of the CLS course date.  Tuition for the Home Study courses are regularly $150 each.

"I survived the exam. I feel pretty good about it, but I could not have done it without your wonderful preparation. The class in February was extraordinary in its content and clarification of the exam material. All the exam questions were similar to the practice tests you gave us.  I am very relieved to have it behind me, but more relieved that I took your course!!  Thanks a million."

"An excellent interplay of instructors' personality, expertise, practice venues and humor. You all seem to really enjoy what you do."

"I don't know if you keep track of how your students do on the exam but I wanted to let you know. . I am a LLL Leader in Indianapolis . I am happy to report not only did I pass, I got a 88%! I'm sure this had a lot to do with the course! Thanks for everything"

"Very helpful that 3 speakers work in different venues – WIC, hospital, private practice etc.. Great changing speakers like you do."

"Thank you for your very informative and well organized presentations. You are a great trio. I appreciate your sense of humor and willingness to share professional as well as personal stories. I also appreciate the fact that you keep up with the latest research in lactation."
